Took it off my Carbine frame and put it on an old style contender frame and it worked fine. Things got off to a slow start when I put the new 30-30 Winchester barrel on the G2 Contender frame and it would not cock. Matter of fact, I will add that comparison to this report. I looked at the other barrels available and decided the 30-30 Winchester would be the best for my needs and it is also very close to the reported performance of the 6.8. No one seems to have any because it is all going to the military (like it should). Finding a barrel was easy, but finding ammo and/or brass was not. I really wanted to see how that new 6.8 SPC military cartridge would perform in the 23″ Contender barrel. When I first started looking at the new TC Contender Carbine I was most interested in the. G2 barrels are untapered and use the new G2 forend with two attachment screws.ģ0-30 Winchester in the TC Contender Carbine Old style contender barrels must use the old style forend. In addition, all of the 161⁄4″ and 21″ barrels made for the old style Contender will readily fit the new G2 frame. It features readily interchangeable 23″ barrels, enabling the shooter to select from several different cartridge options from 17 HMR and 22 LR Match, 330-30 Winchester, 6.8 SPC, 45/70 Gov’t., 45 cal muzzleloading, and 50 cal muzzleloading barrel. The G2 Contender rifle is very compact and weighs only about 6 pounds. See ODHA report on the muzzleloading barrel here. In addition, you can also get a muzzleloading barrel in. The New Features include easier to opening, More clearance between the grip and the trigger guard, incorporates a patented automatic hammer block safety with built-in interlock, and it allows shooters to cock the hammer, lower it, and re-cock it without the need to break the action open again. Last year TC announced the new version of the Contender, the G2 Contender with several improvements over the old model, I hope this an informative thread to for the list. The Thompson Center Contender (TC) has been around for a long time in the form of a great hunting pistol and carbine. I hope these pics are helpful and give a good show and explaination as to why some bolts will absolutely not work with some frames, causing barrels to lock shut and not open. The frame only works with the older bolt on the left in the pics.

(I have been told there is a 4th bolt that the roller pin is machined in and is not removeable.)Īlthough T/C made the split bolt design to upgrade and fix problems, the split bolt will not work with my older, 4 digit frame and the barrel locks up solid and will not open. All three of these lock bolts all have the removeable roller pin that goes thru the underside of the lock bolt.

The last bolt is the one on the right, and is the two piece modern bolt that work with all the newer series 2 and series 3 model contenders. The under side of the middle bolt has a machined in gap on the shaft, and the foot on the end is much thicker. and is one gradual angle to the rear of the face of the bolt. The shape of the top is missing the flats and steps. The middle bolt is the newer one piece bolt. The internals on the older frame are made to fit the machined shape of the older lock bolt. No wonder the newer bolts refused to let the barrel open on the older frame. The shaft on the left bolt underneath doesn't have the machined in gap, and the foot on the end is much thinner. Turned over, the shaft looks completely different than the other two bolts, middle and right. The half moon shaped cut out on the front of the bolt is alot smaller than the cutouts on the middle bolt and the split bolt on the right. It also has a tiny ridge that runs along the front edge of the top stair step. The top has a flat, and 45 degree angle machined into the top-face, then a stair step flat on the top of the bolt. You can see it is completely different than the newer bolts. On the left in both pics, is the first series lock bolt that is on my first 4 digit contender frame. I have had the opportunity to take pics of three completely different lock bolts, and they ae shown below. I hope my sharing the past 'experiences' with different contender frames of different years, and this new thread will be a help to future contender owners.

Thanks Heavymetal for helping out a fellow listmember with 'contenderitis'. He had several different bolts, and was kind enough to send them to me so I could find the one I needed. First and foremost - I need to say a BIG thankyou to listmember HeavyMetal for helping me out with my lockbolt issue.
